What is FIDE and why is it important to chess?

FIDE stands for Fédération Internationale des Échecs, otherwise known as the World Chess Federation. It operates as an organizing body, connecting national chess federations and overseeing tournaments throughout the world.

FIDE also regulates the game itself in that it defines chess by its rulings. It also provides player ratings and issues the Medal of Merit. FIDE provides the structure for modern day chess tournaments and promotion of the game.
